What Is An iPod?

iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple and launched on October 23, 2001. iPod Classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller sizes. As with many other digital music players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

Appli's iTunes software can be used to transfer music to the devices from computers using certain versions of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. For users who choose not to use Apple's software or whose computers cannot run iTunes software, several open source alternatives to iTunes are also available.

What Models of iPods Are Available?

Currently, there are four models of iPods that can be found on the market today and they are:

iPod Models On The Market

Shuffle iPod

The main feature of this iPod is that it can be used for those who like to jog, walk, or go to the gym to work out and listen to music while doing their exercise. This device can be taken wherever you go. This model of iPod has a smaller chip in which to store music and is the least expensive of all models.

Nano iPod

The iPod nano is a portable media player with a video camera designed and marketed by Apple. This model of iPod has a larger chip for storage and comes in a variety of colors to select from.

Classic iPod

The iPod Classic (trademarked as iPod classic and known before its sixth generation as simply te iPod) is portable media player marketed by Apple Inc. To date, there have been six generations of the iPod Classic, as well as a spin-off (the iPod Photo) that was later re-integrated into the main Classic line. All generations use a 1.8-inch hard drive for storage. This model has the largest storage of iPods and can be used not only for music but movies as well.

Touch iPod

The iPod Touch (trademarked and marketed as iPod touch) is a portable media player, personal digital assistant, and Wi-Fi mobile platform designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The iPod touch adds the multi-touch graphical user interface to the iPod line. It is the first iPod with wireless access to the iTunes Store, and also has access to Aple's App Store, enabling content to be purchased and downloaded directly on the device.
